my mom and I were driving from WA state down to bakersfield. at one point we were getting low on gas ans a sign said it was 30 miles to the next big town. we drove and drove and drove, talking and enjoying the countryside along the way. I kept thinking it would be just around the next bend, but still, more country, no town, and the gas light was on. I pulled off the next exit and found one tiny gas station and an antique barn. After filling up, we went to check out the antique barn and asked how much further south the town was that we had been looking for. The guy looked at us funny and said it was like 40 miles north. Somehow we had driven right through it and not seen it????

We did the math, as we were driving her new car, she kept a strict log on gas milage. I didn't add up. we looked at the map, and saw how far we had gone with the gas light on etc. too far.

we cut our visit in Bakersfield short as both of us were freeked out about what had happened and wanted to drive back to see for ourselves what we missed on the way down. Just to prove it to ourselves that there was no town that we missed, or we couldn't see it from the highway if we did...

we were stunned at what we discovered...there was no way we could have missed it being distracted by conversation etc. it was a huge city, a huge university or college campus with stadium, malls gas exits every mile, traffic. fast food stops everything. it was a city. we did not remember seeing any of it. and with the missing mileage on the car...there is only one explaination. we were picked up in the country some 20 miles before the city, and put down some 40 miles past. we remember nothing of the span in between.
