"Faux" lake and ocean monstersThis is a featured page

It broke my heart when I learned that the so-called "Surgeon's Photograph" from Loch Ness was "faux". I had always wondered about why the animal always had circular waves coming out from around the base of its neck -- almost as if it were bobbing up and down vertically in the water -- or someone was holding a figure of a head-neck, and bobbing it up and down by hand.

I looking over different sites concerning our river and lake monsters, I have found images cropped straight out from stills from an old Sherlock Holmes movie, the title of which escapes me. Professor Moriarity has obtained a submarine. On the top of it he has built a figure that looks like Nessie. The periscope tower is concealed in the neck and head of the figure. According to the filmography of the production, very nice shots were made of the contraption, which was not really on a submarine, but on some kind of motor vessel. Then a storm hit. The figure was ripped off and sent to the bottom of Loch Ness. Divers can tell you that the movie prop is still down there, and probably will stay there forever.

There are numerous stories of "faked" monsters, particularly in Loch Ness. But that is not to say that other folks have not had their try at faking such critters elsewhere. Canada is one such area. The photos show a creature with what I would describe as a disproportionately large head. The way it is caught in mid--move in the stills makes me think it is a puppet with someone's arm and hand up in the neck and head. Now that the satellite photos have been discovered, it will be an easy matter to compare these possibly "faux" pictures to one of the real animals.

Let us remember that there are numerous things out there in the wild of which there are only vague stories and blurry photos, but nevertheless, they are there -- to mystify and captivate us. Let the fakers have their fun. Let us seek for the facts.
